PaintMeBlack - A Visual DH Project | The research is an attempt to recapture the realities of traditional African societies by exploring the aesthetics and epistemologies behind the design of various arts and artefacts (woven and tiled designs, carved patterns, weaved or coiled baskets, woven handbags, pottery, brooms, beadworks). Taking a leap from the literary works of scientists and artists like Paulus Gerdes, Ron Eglash, and Claudia Zaslavsky as theoretical framework, the project maintains that these designs are not just embodiments of African experiences, values, belief systems, cultures, and religions, but are frontiers in the fusion between African knowledge systems (mathematics in particular) and information technology. | Augustine Farinola |
